ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Atlantic 10 Tournament has moved from campus sites down the Atlantic City Expressway as quarterfinal action begins from Boardwalk Hall on Friday. Seventh-seeded La Salle will play #2 Saint Louis at 6:30 PM for the right to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
Friday's game will be televised in Philadelphia on The Comcast Network. Additional television clearances are listed above.
Scouting the Explorers (21-11)
La Salle advanced to Atlantic City by defeating Richmond, 80-72, on Tuesday at Tom Gola Arena. The victory was the 14
th at home this season. LU improved to 8-6 in A-10 First Round games and has won four of its last five.
Junior
Ramon Galloway led the team with 17 points and added seven rebounds and eight assists. He is just 24 points away from reaching 1,000 in his collegiate career. He is also proving to enjoy March Madness; in three conference tournament games at South Carolina and La Salle, Galloway is averaging 16.0 ppg.
Senior
Earl Pettis added 15 points, while freshman
Jerrell Wright had 14 for the Explorers. Wright shot a perfect 6-for-6, the first perfect showing from the field since Terrell Williams also shot 6-for-6 versus Manhattan on Dec. 31, 2008.
Senior
Devon White has played well in his last two contests, averaging 11.5 ppg. and 6.0 rpg. in just 20.5 minutes per game. He shot 9-for-11 from the foul line versus Richmond, both of which are career-highs.
The Blue and Gold will look to advance to the A-10 semifinals for the second time in program history. The 2002 Explorers fell to Richmond, 68-60, in the semifinals at the Spectrum.
Pettis continues to lead the Explorers in scoring (15.2 ppg.) while Galloway adds 14.2 ppg. Sophomore
Tyreek Duren chips in with 13.5 ppg. and a team-best 4.0 apg.
Some trends to consider for Friday's game: La Salle is 14-0 when shooting more foul shots and 19-5 when scoring 70 points or more.
La Salle's 21 wins are the most since the 1989-90 team went 30-2.
Scouting the Billikens (24-6)
Saint Louis enters Friday's quarterfinal game as the second seed having recorded a 12-4 mark in the A-10 this season. The Billikens have won eight of their last nine for head coach Rick Majerus.
Brian Conklin, a first-team all-conference selection, leads the team in scoring at 13.9 ppg. Kwamain Mitchell, a third-team pick, adds 12.1 while Cody Ellis comes off the bench to score 10.8 ppg.
SLU is defensive-minded, leading the A-10 in least points allowed (56.6 ppg.). The number is seventh in the nation.
Saint Louis defeated the Explorers 59-51 in February at Tom Gola Arena. The game was tied at 47-47 with 5:18 to play but the Billikens went on a 12-4 run to finish the game. La Salle committed an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers in the contest.
The Series
SLU holds a 8-6 advantage in the all-time series. The teams have met three times in the postseason, including the 2009 A-10 First Round.
Next up:
The winner of the La Salle-Saint Louis contest will meet the winner of the #3 Xavier-#6 Dayton game on Saturday at 3:30 PM.
