La Salle Visits Penn In Mid-Week Action On Wednesday


PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team will remain in Philadelphia for a mid-week contest on Wednesday at Big 5 rival Penn. First pitch is 3 PM.

Scouting the Explorers (15-16)

The Explorers will look to bounce back after a tough week against Penn and UMass. La Salle continues to get strong efforts on the mound and rank fourth in the A-10 with a 2.75 ERA in conference games only. LU is sixth overall in ERA at 4.28.

On a national level, the Explorer arms are 24th in the country in least number of walks. La Salle is 14th in strikeout-walk ratio as well.

At the plate, the Blue and Gold will look to get back on track after losing all three games this weekend by one run each. Senior Jeff Flax is the only Explorer hitter batting over.300 at .306. He moved into seventh place on La Salle's all-time hit list with 213, passing John Rickards (2005-08) with 211. Flax is also third all-time in career at-bats with 730. Next up is Rich Prall (2004-07) with 760.

Five Explorers are batting between .290 and .300, led by junior Dan Klem at .299. Klem and senior Marc Schoch lead the team with 19 RBI.

Senior Brendan Norton is second in the nation in walks per game and has moved into tenth on La Salle's all-time stolen base list.

Scouting the Quakers (14-12)

Penn defeated La Salle, 9-4, on Wednesday in the Liberty Bell Classic semifinals before splitting an Ivy League weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard. The Quakers lost to Dartmouth twice before sweeping Harvard on Sunday.

Greg Zebrack leads Penn in many offensive categories including batting (.384), runs (26), doubles (13), home runs (five) and RBI (22). Zebrack ranks eighth nationally in slugging percentage (.520).

Ryan Deitrich is batting .333 with three home runs and 17 RBI to help pace the UP offense.

Penn is third in the Ivy in batting and is second in the Ancient Eight in steals.

The Quakers will return to the road this weekend in a crucial four-game series at Princeton.
