PHILADELPHIA – Saint Louis broke up a close game with eight runs in its final two at-bats to beat La Salle, 11-3, on Saturday at Hank DeVincent Field. Senior
Zack Feierstein and George Smith, Jr. each had two hits, including a double, for the Explorers.
The Blue and Gold took a 1-0 lead in the third when senior
Jon Gyles doubled and was driven home on a two-out RBI single by classmate
Brendan Norton.
SLU (28-14, 10-7 A-10) answered with three unearned runs in the fifth off junior starter Ryan Donahue. A two-out error allowed the Billikens on the board and chased Donahue after five. The southpaw scattered six hits over five innings, without allowing an unearned run, and struck out four. He falls to 1-3 with the loss.
La Salle (17-25, 4-10 A-10) tried to bounce back in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Feierstein and Smith, Jr. led off the frame and Norton sacrificed the pair up to second and third. After a walk to senior
Jeff Flax, an RBI fielder's choice by junior
Dan Klem made it 3-2 but another fielder's choice ended the threat.
The Billikens opened up the game with four runs in the seventh and four more in the ninth. La Salle scored its only other run in the eighth on consecutive doubles by Feierstein and Smith, Jr.
Alex Alemann improved to 6-0 with seven strong innings. He allowed three earned runs and struck out eight.
Jerry Mancuso homered and drove in four runs for SLU.
The series concludes on Sunday at noon.
