Costly Errors Allow Saint Louis To Sweep Series With 8-3 Win On Sunday

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle committed a few costly errors that led to six unearned runs as Saint Louis finished off the series sweep with an 8-3 victory on Sunday at Hank DeVincent Field. Seniors Jeff Flax and Marc Schoch each had a pair of hits for the Explorers.

The Blue and Gold did not lend much support to senior starter Kevin Christy, who allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings, although only one of those runs was earned. He struck out four batters and needs 11 to break the school's all-time record. He fell to 1-3 with the loss.

La Salle got on the board with runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first, Schoch doubled home Flax, who had singled. Two innings later, junior Joe Bennie singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Schoch's RBI single.

Christy was rolling through three, as only one ball left the infield, and having struck out four. He recorded the first two outs in the first before the inning was extended by an error. A single by Grant Nelson made it 2-1 La Salle and Marco DiRoma blasted a two-run homer to give the Billikens a lead they would not relinquish.

SLU (29-14, 11-7 A-10) added four more in the fourth, three unearned thanks to two Explorer errors and led 7-2. Junior Pat Christensen pitched the next 3.2 innings, allowing just an earned run in the sixth, and struck out three. Senior Caolan Ronan pitched a scoreless ninth in relief.

A sophomore George Smith, Jr. sacrifice fly in the fourth scored senior Jon Gyles (hit by pitch) for the Explorers' third and final run.

Nick Bates (4-1) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs in 3.1 innings. He struck out four. Jerry Mansuco had two hits and two RBI.

La Salle (17-26, 4-11 A-10) travels to Army on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
