Christy Sets La Salle's All-Time Strikeout Record In 5-1 Win At Saint Joseph's

Box Score

MERION STATION, Pa. – La Salle senior righthander Kevin Christy set the program's all-time strikeout record and the Explorers scored four first inning runs en route to a 5-1 victory at Saint Joseph's in the series finale on Sunday at Smithson Field.

"Kevin is the prime example of hard work and dedication and I'm proud to be his coach," head coach Mike Lake said. "It was a special series win especially against a quality, well-coached team like St. Joe's. I'm proud of the effort our boys displayed this weekend."

Christy fanned five Hawks to bring his career total to 223, breaking the record of 222 set by Kevin Fuqua from 2008-11. The North Penn graduate allowed one earned run in six strong innings, scattering five hits and walking none. He improves to 2-4 with the victory and lowers his ERA to 2.67.
Redshirt freshman Adam Cherry pitched a scoreless seventh and junior closer Pat Christensen threw two shutout innings to finish the game.
Four Explorers (20-29, 7-14 A-10) recorded multi-hit games, led by sophomore George Smith, Jr. who singled, doubled and drove in two. Seniors Zack Feierstein, Jeff Flax and Jon Gyles all had two hits and drove in one.

With the win, La Salle captured the series victory by defeating the Hawks, 12-4, on Saturday and 5-1 on Sunday. Friday's game went 11 innings before SJU captured a 4-2 win on a walk-off home run.

Most of the action happened in the first inning with the visitors taking a 4-0 lead. Senior Brendan Norton walked to lead off the frame and moved to third on Flax's single. After a foul out, senior Marc Schoch drove home a run on a sacrifice fly.

With two outs, a single by Feierstein kept the inning alive and Smith, Jr. followed with a two-run double to left. Negrin then singled and Gyles drove home a run on a single to right to extend the lead to 4-0.

Feierstein knocked in a run in the fifth to make it 5-0 and St. Joe's scored on a pair of doubles in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Jordan Carter (0-5) suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings. Steven Schuler threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Hawks (22-28, 12-8 A-10) while Ryan Pater had a pair of hits.

La Salle will play its final non-conference game of the season at West Virginia on Tuesday at 5 PM before hosting Dayton in a three-game series beginning on Thursday.
