PHILADELPHIA - La Salle recorded 16 hits, one short of a season-high, but Dayton pushed across a run in the tenth inning to defeat the Explorers, 4-3, on Friday at Hank DeVincent Field. Five Explorers had multiple hits, led by junior
Dan Klem's four singles.
Seniors
Marshall Garcia,
Tony Negrin and
Jon Gyles and sophomore George Smith, Jr. each had a pair of hits for the Blue and Gold.
On the mound, junior southpaw Ryan Donahue gave another strong effort, going eight innings and allowing three earned runs. He struck out a career-high seven batters and walked two in the no-decision.
The well-played game did not feature an error by either side and neither team led by more than one run throughout the contest.
Dayton (27-28, 16-7 A-10), which kept its hopes alive for an Atlantic 10 regular season title with the victory, scored a run in the first on an RBI single by A.J. Ryan.
La Salle responded in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Senior
Marc Schoch led off with a single and moved to second on a senior
Zack Feierstein sacrifice bunt. Smith then singled to right and Negrin followed with a RBI single through the right side to make it 1-1.
The Explorers took their first lead in the third when senior
Jeff Flax led off with a single, moved to third on Klem's second hit of the game and scored on Schoch's sacrifice fly.
Bobby Glover gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead when he blasted a two-run home run to left in the fifth. The lead lasted one frame as the hosts tied it in the sixth.
Negrin singled with one out and moved to second on Garcia's single to right. Gyles then doubled high off the wall in left to score Negrin to make it 3-3.
Senior
Brendan Norton followed with a groundball to third where Robby Sunderman came home to throw out Garcia in a close play at the plate.
Donahue left the game after a leadoff single in the ninth and senior
Caolan Ronan induced a sacrifice bunt and two fly-outs to keep the game tied.
Junior closer
Pat Christensen came on to pitch the tenth and gave up a lead-off single to Brian Blasik, who was sacrificed to second. Glover then came through with an RBI single to give UD a 4-3 lead. It was his third RBI of the contest.
Christensen (4-3) suffered the loss after allowing one earned run in one inning.
Tim Bury went six innings for Dayton, allowing 12 hits and three earned runs. One day after recording the save, Burney Mitchen pitched the final four without surrendering a run for the victory. He struck out four and scattered four hits to improve to 5-7.
La Salle (20-32, 7-16 A-10) will conclude the 2012 season on Saturday at 1 PM. Senior Day will begin at approximately 12:45 PM.
