PHILADELPHIA - La Salle student-athletes gathered in Rodden Theatre on Tuesday, September 11 for a town hall meeting to kick off the 2012-13 year.
The standing room only audience was welcomed by Director of Athletics
Dr. Tom Brennan, who urged student-athletes to not be satisified with a good year if they can have a great year. He touched on being part of a greater community then themselves and to celebrate not only the accomplishments of the past year but also the 150 years prior.
Next up was a highlight video of the 2011-12 season that drew plenty of cheers from the student-athletes in attendance.
Brother Michael McGinniss, President of the University, followed and began by displaying framed photos of student-athletes that hang in his office. He spoke about the importance of athletics to the University and each individual student-athlete.
Tollefson, a Philadelphia sportscaster and founder of One Child Saved, a non-profit foundation for local youth, spoke about how athletics breaks through any type of barrier. He also spoke about giving back. "Anytime you have a chance as a student athlete to help a child, that is a challenge that must be met," he said.
Lt. Col. Doug Levien '94, a former baseball letterwinner that has served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, received a standing ovation after his comments, which were especially poignant on the 11th anniversary of the attacks on the country. He spoke about leadership and recognizing how fortunate student-athletes are to be going to a place of higher education and playing college sports while their fellow Americans are protecting the country.
