Tom Baker assisted on the game winner in the 10th minute and added a second-half insurance goal as the La Salle men's soccer squad topped Mount St. Mary's 2-0 on Sunday at McCarthy Stadium.
The Explorers improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Mountaineers drop to 1-2.
Jason Plumhoff got the Explorers on the board at the 9:25 mark for his second straight game-winning goal. Baker passed a ground ball from the left side, which found Plumhoff in front of the net on the right side. Plumhoff then chipped the ball in past Mountaineer keeper Peter Steve to put the Explorers up 1-0.
The remainder of the first half was evenly played, with the majority of play occurring between the 25-yard marks.
Baker netted the insurance goal in the 64th minute to give the Explorers some breathing space.
Joe Farrell rocketed a ball toward the net, which hit off the keeper's pads. Baker picked up the rebound and lined the ball into the back left of the net.
The Mountaineers recorded seven shots in the second half but La Salle keeper
John McCarthy needed just one save in that half (five overall) to record his second straight shutout.
La Salle held a 19-13 shot advantage, while Mount St. Mary's held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. The often-chippy game saw 22 combined fouls and six combined yellow cards.
McCarthy earned the win with five saves. Mount keeper Steve took the loss in net, stopping five shots.
The Explorers remain at home this week, hosting Bucknell on Friday (9/7) at 7 p.m.
