Box Score
VILLANOVA, Pa. - A late goal by
Rob Friskey was not enough to counter a 2-0 Villanova lead as the Wildcats took a 2-1 decision on Thursday afternoon.
Friskey's goal came in the 68th minute when he found the ball in traffic in front of the net and launched a header in for the score.
Villanova (6-2) took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game on the first of two Kyle Soroka goals. Soroka collected his own rebound and sank it in for the first score.
Soroka then took a free kick in the 66th minute that found the back of the net to put the Wildcats up 2-0 before Friskey countered just over two minutes later to keep the home squad on its toes.
The Explorers (5-2-1) got two more shots off in the second half to attempt to tie the game, with the closest being
Kameron Teel's shot on goal that was stopped by Nova keeper John Fogarty.
Villanova held a 21-8 advantage on shots and 3-0 lead on corner kicks.
John McCarthy stopped seven shots in the effort, while Fogarty collected four saves.
The Explorers head to UMBC on Tuesday (9/25) for the second of three straight road games.
