PHILADELPHIA – La Salle overcame an early two-goal deficit to defeat Lehigh in overtime, 3-2, when
Renee Washington headed a cross from
Leigh Gray into the back of the net just five minutes into the extra frame.
“Despite a rough start we rallied together to get a great team win against a good opponent,” said Washington. “We never stopped believing and fighting.”
After relinquishing two goals to Lehigh's Murphee Greeley within the first 11 minutes of play,
Gabriella Carbone netted the first of three unanswered Explorers goals in the 19
th minute, tapping in a shot from sophomore
Kelsey Haycook.
“As disappointed as I was with our performance going down two goals early, the girls really showed a lot of character in the second half and overtime,” said head coach
Paul Royal. “It goes to show that our leadership is growing and we're continuing to improve. It was great to see Gabby get her first goal on the season after transitioning back to the front line.”
La Salle dominated the offensive play for the remainder of the game, out-shooting the Mountain Hawks 23-9, but still trailed by a goal with under two minutes to play.
As time continued to tick away, sophomore
Anna Dolhansky sent a cross into the box and found the hot foot of Haycook who tapped in her seventh goal of the season to send the game to overtime.
With the momentum now in their favor, La Salle came out firing on all cylinders and scored the game-winner on just their second shot of the overtime period.
