McCarthy Stops Nine to Preserve Scoreless Draw at UMBC

Box Score

BALTIMORE - Junior keeper John McCarthy recorded a season-high nine saves, helping the La Salle men's soccer squad overcome a 17-5 shot disadvantage to force a scoreless draw at UMBC on Tuesday evening.

McCarthy stopped seven in regulation and added two more stops in the second overtime period to keep UMBC (4-2-3) off the board and record his fourth shutout of the season.

The Explorers (5-2-2) managed just one shot on goal when Jidell Roach launched a ball toward the upper part of the net which was punched up and away by Retriever keeper Phil Saunders with 43 seconds left in the second OT.

The home squad also owned an 11-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The two squads, which have met in five of the last six seasons, have now gone 1-1-1 against each other in the last three meetings.

The Explorers return to action on Saturday when they wrap up the nonconference schedule at Saint Peter's with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
