Last Time Out
The Explorers dropped their Atlantic 10 opener, 74-65 at Charlotte on Wednesday evening. La Salle outscored the 49ers 48-41 in the second half, but a 33-17 halftime deficit proved too much to overcome.
Ramon Galloway led all scorers with 23 points,, upping his season average to 18.1 points/game, the highest mark in the A-10.
As a team, the Blue and Gold shot only 33 percent (25-77) from the field and 14 percent (4-29) from three, both season lows. Joining Galloway in double figures were
Tyreek Duren (12 pts) and
Jerrell Wright (11 pts).
The Explorers notched a season-best 24 offensive rebounds in the contest and forced 21 Charlotte turnovers. After shooting only 22 percent (7-32) in the first period, the Blue and Gold picked up the pace in the second, converting 18-45 (40 percent) from the field.
All-Time Series
In 27 meetings dating back to 1955, Richmond holds a 14-13 edge over La Salle. Last season, the schools split a pair, each winning at home. The Explorers' 80-72 victory came in the first round of the A-10 Championships.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach
Dr. John Giannini on...
The continued development of
Jerrell Wright:
Jerrell plays hard and we have high expectations for him. We think he can do more. All of us missed some good shots in this game [vs. Charlotte] and Jerrell had some great shots that just didn't fall for him so he was close to having an even better game. We think he should be one of the best big men if not the best big man in each game we play and we think he should be one of the better big men in the Atlantic 10.
What expectations are for Richmond:
They shoot it really well. They have the number one three point shooter in the country, Darien Brothers. They run the Princeton offense. They're veteran, so they execute. It's hard to pressure them because they're very comfortable in their system and they have skilled guards and they've been around and they've seen different defenses, so they present a real challenge.
The strength of the A-10 this season:
Everyone in the A-10 is going to be a good team. It's a very special league this year and if somehow you can get yourself in the top half, you're going to have a chance at the postseason. But that's harder done than said.
Scouting the Spiders
Richmond has won two straight after dropping its previous three coming into A-10 play. The Spiders toppled Rhode Island 64-61 at home Wednesday evening behind a team-high 15 points from senior guard Darien Brothers. Brothers (15.6 ppg) entered the week as the nation's leader in three point field goal percentage (55 percent).
Junior forward Derrick Williams averages 13.6 points/game (56% FG) and pulls down a team-high 6.8 rebounds/game but has missed the last two games while sophomore guard Kendall Anthony comes in averaging 13.4 points/game.
As a team, the Spiders rank first in the conference in three point field goal percentage (39 percent) and rank third in field goal percentage (46 percent) and free throw percentage (72 percent).
