PHILADELPHIA – Jason Plumhoff scored his fifth goal of the season and assisted on La Salle's other two goals, as the Explorers defeated Duquesne, 3-1, on a rainy Friday evening at McCarthy Stadium in their Atlantic 10 opener.

"The A-10 games are always competitive and hard fought," head coach Pat Farrell said post-game. "You have to be able to get points at home because they're very difficult to get on the road. So, tonight is a big plus."

18 minutes into the action, the Explorers mounted their first attack, culminating in Joe Farrell's first goal of the season. Plumhoff played a ball to Farrell who finished the job amidst a cluster of Duquesne defenders.

The Dukes responded quickly, however, burying a goal in the 25th minute off the foot of Simon Gomez. Austin Lange was credited with the assist as the visitors knotted the game at one, which remained the score until halftime.

Plumhoff found himself in the middle of the action again in the 62nd minute when he buried his fifth goal of the year. Rob Friskey and Pat Sullivan earned assists on the play, the first of the campaign for each player.

Friskey sent the Dukes packing in the 85th minute, burying his second marker of the season on a Plumhoff assist. The 3-1 result proved to be the match's final score.

John McCarthy made seven saves in the effort, including four in the second half. Duquesne goalkeeper came in leading the conference in save percentage (.860) but turned away only four of the seven shots on goal he saw.

The Dukes outshot the home team 10-9 for the match and held an 8-4 advantage in the corner department. Though the Explorers made only three shot attempts in the second period, two found the back of the net.

La Salle will host St. Bonaventure on Sunday at 1 PM at McCarthy Stadium.
