PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's swimming and diving team opened up its season at Drexel on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Dragons 174-126. Johan Roth highlighted the day for the Explorers with a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.38) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.41).

In his first collegiate meet, freshman Mattias Glenesk wasted no time making a resounding first impression, winning the 1000-yard freestyle with a 9:36.25. Glenesk finished over 20 seconds ahead of the second place swimmer.

Glenesk's classmate, Jerry Gravel, took home a top prize of his own, placing first in the 200-yard IM with a 1:57.32. Gravel's brother, James Gravel, touched the wall at 2:00.35 in the event, good for a third place finish. He also registered a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:44.87.

La Salle's 200-yard medley relay (Hughes, Roth, Fischer, Cabral) clocked a 1:34.88, just a second behind Drexel's A team, which took first. It was the same story in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the Explorers (Roth, Cabrera, Derr, Gravel) notched a 3:13.04 en route to a second place time.

The Blue and Gold showed strong in the 200-yard butterfly, claiming three of the four top times. Sean McCaffrey posted a 2:00.23, good for second place and was followed by Greg Fischer (2:00.31) and Taylor Jeronis (2:00.53).

On the 1-meter diving board, Robert Freeling (251.93), CJ Gimpel (251.11), and Timothy Durante (186.23) came in second, third, and fourth, respectively. Freeling and Gimpel also finished second and third in the 3-meter dive with a 248.10 and 241.23, respectively.

The waters of Kirk Pool await the Explorers as they will swim their first home meet of the year on Wednesday at 5 PM.
