PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's swimming and diving team opened up its season at Drexel on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Dragons 174-126.
Johan Roth highlighted the day for the Explorers with a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.38) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.41).
In his first collegiate meet, freshman
Mattias Glenesk wasted no time making a resounding first impression, winning the 1000-yard freestyle with a 9:36.25. Glenesk finished over 20 seconds ahead of the second place swimmer.
Glenesk's classmate,
Jerry Gravel, took home a top prize of his own, placing first in the 200-yard IM with a 1:57.32. Gravel's brother, James Gravel, touched the wall at 2:00.35 in the event, good for a third place finish. He also registered a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:44.87.
La Salle's 200-yard medley relay (Hughes, Roth, Fischer, Cabral) clocked a 1:34.88, just a second behind Drexel's A team, which took first. It was the same story in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the Explorers (Roth, Cabrera, Derr, Gravel) notched a 3:13.04 en route to a second place time.
The Blue and Gold showed strong in the 200-yard butterfly, claiming three of the four top times.
Sean McCaffrey posted a 2:00.23, good for second place and was followed by
Greg Fischer (2:00.31) and
Taylor Jeronis (2:00.53).
On the 1-meter diving board,
Robert Freeling (251.93),
CJ Gimpel (251.11), and
Timothy Durante (186.23) came in second, third, and fourth, respectively. Freeling and Gimpel also finished second and third in the 3-meter dive with a 248.10 and 241.23, respectively.
The waters of Kirk Pool await the Explorers as they will swim their first home meet of the year on Wednesday at 5 PM.
