DAYTON, Ohio – The La Salle men's soccer team advanced to the second round of the Atlantic 10 tournament after defeating Dayton on Thursday night, 3-2, in penalty kicks after playing 110 minutes of regulation to a 1-1 draw. The fourth-seeded Explorers will take on top-seeded Saint Louis on Friday at 7:30 PM.
La Salle (8-7-4) made its presence felt first in the 14
th minute when
Jason Plumhoff was the beneficiary of an error from Dayton goalkeeper Chris Froschauer. Froschauer mishandled a pass from a Dayton defender and Plumhoff pounced on the opportunity and buried one in an empty net.
"I saw the ball get passed back to their goalie so I chased him down and jumped up and I actually didn't see him whiff," an exuberant Plumhoff said post-game. "There was a huge roar from the crowd and I looked up and the ball was rolling past the goalie so I just sprinted and dove for the ball and kicked it home."
It was the 27
th career goal for the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, who is one goal shy of tying 2010 A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, Ryan Richter, for sixth in program history.
The Flyers (14-2-3) answered back in the 33
rd minute when Greg Enstone cleaned up a deflection to tie the game up 1-1. Amass Amankona was credited with the assist.
With the game knotted at one at halftime, Dayton upped its pressure in the second half, berating goalkeeper
John McCarthy with shot after shot, 19 in all in the period. McCarthy, who made a season-high 12 saves in regulation, made a spectacular one in the 86
th minute when Amankona had a point-blank look at the net but punched it away with his left hand.
McCarthy preserved the tie again in the 95
th minute when he snatched the ball off the foot of a Dayton forward with a clean look at the goal. He shined even brighter, however, in the penalty kick shootout.
He turned away two Flyer attempts as Plumhoff,
Joe Farrell, and
Matt Robinson each deposited their shots in the back of the net. McCarthy guessed right on Dayton's Bastien Allheily's attempt, The Flyers' last ditch effort to push the Blue and Gold into the second round.
Dayton outshout the Explorers, 31-16, and held a 7-4 corner kick edge. Froschauer made four saves in goal.
