PHILADELPHIA – While the La Salle volleyball season concluded last Sunday, junior middle hitter Jennifer Whelan received special recognition on Wednesday, being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. She is the sixth player in program history to earn the honor, while this is just the eighth time a La Salle player has earned the accolade overall, joining Melissa Hodge (1998,1999), Kelly Daniel (2000), Kristin Russo (2001), Lauren Woods (2004), and Christa Dominick (2007,2008).
Â
Whelan was an integral part of the 2013 Explorers, despite missing the first six matches of the season recovering from injury. She finished third on the team in both kills (104) and total blocks (28), while starting in 25 of 26 matches. She posted a season high 12 kills and five block assists against Fordham (11/15).
Â
She has been an exemplary student since beginning at La Salle in the fall of 2011, epitomizing what it truly means to be a student-athlete. The nursing major has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, while also serving as the Vice-President of Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Â
She has appeared on the Atlantic 10 Commissioners Honor Roll each of her first two years at La Salle. The nod for A-10 All Academic is the first of her career.
