BRONX, N.Y. – Jason Plumhoff netted a pair of goals less than a minute apart late in the second half as the La Salle men's soccer team defeated Fordham, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Jack Coffey Field. With the victory, the Blue and Gold improved to 7-7-3 and 4-2-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Both teams exchanged pleasantries in the first half, combining for 10 shots in the scoreless period. The second half played out similarly for the first 40 minutes, but Plumhoff finally broke the ice in the 86
th minute.
The senior scored his ninth of the season off an assist from
Glenroy Chapman to put the Explorers up 1-0 at the 85:48 mark. Less than a minute later, La Salle used the same combination to unlock Fordham's defense once again, putting the game away, 2-0.
John McCarthy played brilliantly in goal for the Blue and Gold, recording his fourth shutout of the season and the 27
th of his career behind nine saves. Ram keeper Alex Naples made five saves of his own.
La Salle outshot Fordham, 13-12, though the home team held a 4-1 corner kick advantage and 9-7 shots on goal edge.
The Explorers will wrap up their regular season on Sunday at 1 PM at George Washington.
