CORAL GABLES, Fla. – La Salle raced to an early 12-7 lead but Miami controlled play the remainder of the contest to record a 71-58 victory at the Bank United Center on Sunday afternoon. Senior Tyreek Duren led the Explorers with 18 points and five rebounds while classmate Sam Mills had 15 and three steals.

Junior center Steve Zack recorded his Atlantic 10 best seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. He has double-doubles in six of his past seven contests.

"It's good we have a break," head coach Dr. John Giannini said.  "I really have to look at what we can do better because I do think our players are giving effort. I give Miami a ton of credit, they just outplayed us. "

Duren hit a pair of three's and a lay-up and junior Jerrell Wright had four points as the Blue and Gold quickly score 12 points in the first three-plus minutes. Miami used its superior length and switched to a zone which caused problems for the Explorers, who scored only 12 points in the remaining 16 minutes of the first half to trail 34-24 at the break.

The Hurricanes (7-5) extended their lead to as many as 15 points in the second half before La Salle began to chip away. A 10-3 run capped by Mills' steal and lay-up cut the deficit to 54-46 with 5:30 to play but tip-ins on three straight Miami possessions brought the lead back to double-figures.

With 2:11 remaining, Duren hit a three that cut the Hurricane lead to seven points but the Explorers would get no closer.

Rion Brown led Miami with 17 points, while Garrius Adams had 13 and James Kelly had 10 for the defending ACC champions.

"This was the best game of the season for us by far," Miami head coach Jim Larranaga said.

La Salle (6-6) will take 13 days off before traveling to The Palestra to visit Big 5 rival Penn on January 4 at 7 PM.

NOTES: Mills was playing 45 minutes from his hometown of Sunrise, Fla…Duren moved past Frank Corace into 22nd place on the all-time scoring list (1,414)…This was just the third time this season La Salle has been outscored in the paint.
