GENEVA, Ohio – The La Salle women's swimming and diving team currently sits in third place out of the eleven-team field after the first night of competition at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship. The Explorers started its 2013 championship in style as the 200 yard medley relay of
Chelsey Curran,
Elizabeth Jordan,
Jessica Simunek, and
Katie Snee set a new school record by over seven-tenths of a second, clocking in at 1:43.08.
The old record, set just last year, contained the same relay members as tonight's record-setting relay with the exception of
Amina Wilson who was replaced by Curran on the backstroke leg. Unfortunately, the relay missed making the podium by the slimmest of margins – one one-hundredth of a second. Xavier just edged out the Explorers to grab the bronze medal. Nonetheless, school records aren't to be taken lightly as this performance bodes well going forward into the rest of the championship.
The Explorers racked up a total of 86 points, largely thanks to strong performances from the diving squad. Freshman
Kelly Quinn led the way for the La Salle divers, earning an eighth place finish on 1 meter with a score of 214.05. Just behind her in ninth was junior
Shauna Hannings followed by sophomores
Paige Frishkorn in 11
th and
Dahlia Gordon in 13
th.
The Explorers begin tomorrow morning's preliminary session at 10:30 AM.
