PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore
Ryan Welling spanked a three run homer in the second inning which proved to be enough insurance for the Explorer pitching staff in a 4-2 victory over Fordham on Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
With the victory, the Explorers improved to 5-12 (1-0 A-10) on the season while Fordham dipped to 10-9 (0-1 A-10).
Senior
Ryan Donohue (6 IP, 2 ER) earned his first win of the season (1-1) and senior
Pat Christensen earned his second save after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Justin Korenblatt went 3-for-4 with an RBI, upping his season average to a team-best .379. The Explorers sprayed eight hits and Fordham notched five.
The Rams picked up a run in the top of the second but La Salle countered in the bottom of the inning with one swing of the bat.
Joey Ravert (0-4) flew out to lead off the inning and Korenblatt followed with a double to left center. George Smith, Jr.
(1-4) singled to put two men on for Welling. The catcher deposited a 1-0 fastball over the left field wall to give La Salle a 3-1 lead. The round tripper was Welling's second of the season.
Fordham added a run in the top of the third and the game remained at 3-2 until the eighth. Korenblatt doubled home
Kevin Baron (1-3) to cushion the Explorer lead.
Christensen relieved
Mike McLeod (.1 IP, 1 ER) in the seventh and earned his 35
th career save.
The Explorers and Rams will continue their weekend A-10 series on Saturday at 1 PM.
Shane Hollman will toe the slab for La Salle and Chris Pike will start on the bump for Fordham.
