Richmond Visits La Salle In Three-Game Atlantic 10 Series


PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team will host Richmond in a three-game Atlantic 10 set beginning on Thursday. The series will conclude a 10-game home stand for the Explorers, who have posted a 5-2 record at Hank DeVincent Field this season.

Last Time Out
La Salle jumped on Villanova early, but the Wildcats scored the game's last four runs to secure a 5-3 victory over the Explorers on Tuesday afternoon at DeVincent Field. Junior outfielder Justin Korenblatt (2-3) was lone Explorer to register a multi-hit game in the defeat. Four La Salle relievers successfully combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings to finish the game.

Explorer Notes
  • As a team, the Explorers rank 11th in the conference in batting average (.252), 14th in ERA (6.44), and fourth in fielding percentage (.967).
  • Korenblatt has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, picking up 11 hits in 25 at-bats (.440) in the stretch. He leads the club in batting average (.357).
  • Sophomore shortstop Kevin Baron is riding a six-game hitting streak and ranks second in the squad in batting average (.352).
  • Sophomore Mark Williams has picked up hits in six straight games, hitting .411 (7-17) during the streak. He has doubled in three consecutive games, the longest such streak on the team this year.
  • Sophomore catcher Ryan Welling leads the Explorers in home runs (3) and clubbed two against Fordham over the weekend.
  • Sophomore reliever Adam Cherry has thrown 10.1 innings (8 apperances) without surrendering an earned run.
  • Senior reliever Pat Christensen saved back-to-back-to-back games over the weekend against Fordham, picking up A-10 Co-Pitcher of the Week and Big 5 Pitcher of the Week honors. The La Jolla, Calif. native is on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List for the third consecutive year. He has struck out 24 hitters in 19.1 innings (11.2 K/9).
  • Senior starting pitcher Ryan Donohue notched his first victory of the season last Friday over Fordham. Donohue has started on the hill in four of La Salle's 7 wins this season.
  • Sophomore starting pitcher Shane Hollman earned his first collegiate victory over the Rams on Saturday, tossing six shutout innings. Hollman boasts the staff's second best K/9 ratio (9.8).
  • Junior starting pitcher Shawn O'Neill has won his last two outings, amassing 14.2 innings with 14 strikeouts while surrendering only one earned run. He was named A-10 Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago for his complete game shutout vs. Chicago State (3/17). Opposing hitters are batting only .195 this season off O'Neill, the best mark on the staff.

Spider Notes

  • Richmond has lost five of its last six and dropped two of three to Charlotte in its A-10 series opener last weekend. The Spiders enter the weekend third in the A-10 in batting average (.288), sixth in team ERA (3.91), and second in fielding percentage (.973). They have stolen 30 bases as a team, tied for fifth in the conference.
  • Senior Bret Williams ranks second in the A-10 in batting average (.414), good for the club-high. He owns a team-high in hits (29) and is tied for the club-lead in RBI (19).
  • Junior Nick Poulos is the second-leading hitter for the Spiders (.359), 14th highest in the A-10.
  • Senior second baseman Chris Bell is hitting .359, with a team-high 11 walks and .477 on-base percentage.
  • Senior outfielder Matt Zink is hitting .321 and ranks second in the A-10 in stolen bases (13).
  • Sophomore starting pitcher Zak Sterling owns the eighth-best ERA in the A-10 (2.45) and has struck out 29 hitters in 33 innings (7.9 K/9). Opponents are hitting .248 against him. He is expected to start on Thursday.
  • Junior starting pitcher Andrew Blum has not lost yet this season (3-0), and has struck out 28 batters in 35 innings (7.2 K/9). He is the probable starter for Friday.
  • Richmond has two relievers with three saves each. Sophomore Dylan Stoops has posted a 4.24 ERA, striking out 17 hitters in 17 innings (9 K/9). Sophomore Ryan Cook has notched a 4.43 ERA in 20.1 innings, striking out 19 (8.4 K/9).
