Scouting the Explorers
La Salle dropped two of three in a weekend series at Texas Tech over the weekend. The Blue and Gold secured a 6-5 victory on Friday evening before being suffering 3-0 and 7-0 setbacks. The Explorers are 2-0 this season in games decided by one run.
Pat Christensen threw five dominant innings in relief to earn the win on Friday. The senior struck out five Red Raiders and walked only one while throwing 71 pitches. Christensen also earned a save in La Salle's season opener. In two outings, the reliever has yet to give up an earned run and has fanned seven.
Kevin Baron continues to stay hot, entering the series with a blistering .478 batting average. He picked up four hits over the weekend also worked two scoreless innings in relief on Saturday. Baron's left-side infield partner,
Dan Klem, upped his season average to .346 over the weekend after going a combined 5-for-10 on Friday and Saturday. Klem carries a three game hitting streak into this week's action.
Justin Korenblatt began the season 3-for-18 (.167) but has since busted out with a 5-for-8 (.625) stretch to improve his average to .308.
Kevin Conroy and
Collin McGowan both sit at .300 exactly to give the Explorers five hitters at the clip.
Alec Baum and
Adam Cherry both notched scoreless outings vs. Texas Tech out of the bullpen to maintain perfect ERAs.
Scouting the Lobos
Ranked 21
st in Baseball America's preseason poll, New Mexico has started off the year 2-6. Its two season victories came vs. Oklahoma State in its opening weekend and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Junior corner infielder D.J. Peterson was a preseason second-team All-American by Baseball America after posting a .419/.490/.734 slash line last season. Through six games this year, the junior has notched a .344/.462/.844 line. He's also bopped three homers and picked up a team-high 11 RBI.
The Lobos boast five regulars with a batting average of .300 or better while picking up a .284/.363/.402 line as a team. The pitching staff sports a 4.14 team ERA thus far with a .267 batting average against.
