Kingston, RI -- Hudson Narke and
Titus Shay combined to throw 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen and
Kosei Suzuki drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth inning RBI single as La Salle defeated Rhode Island, 4-3, to even the series Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied, 3-3, in the fifth inning,
Hudson Narke entered to pitch for the Explorers with the potential go-ahead run on base and one out. Narke got out of the jam unscathed and proceeded to spin scoreless innings in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to give the offense a chance to break the ice.
The Explorers' bats did just that in the eighth.
Rueben Livingston led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt, and scored when next batter Suzuki singled to center.
Narke started the ninth inning but Rhode Island was able to scratch together a pair of hits to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with one out when Narke handed the ball off to Shay. Shay got the first out on a sacrifice bunt, albeit allowing the tying and go-ahead runners to advance to scoring position. However, Shay locked down the save with a strikeout on the next batter to give La Salle its fourth Atlantic 10 Conference victory of the season.
The Explorers' bats started off hot out of the gate.
Ryan Perez got things started with an RBI single in the first inning and
Justin Szestowicki followed up with a run-scoring base hit of his own in the second.
Carter Groen then drove in his team-leading 52nd RBI of the season with a fielders' choice groundout in the third, at the time giving La Salle a 3-0 lead.
Rhode Island came back with one in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of fifth to tie the game.
La Salle goes for its second A-10 series victory of the season tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 12:00 pm.
