PHILADELPHIA – Alfredo Santana has been named to the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Academic All-Conference Team, the conference office announced Tuesday. Santana joined nine other A-10 runners on the squad in what continues to a decorated senior campaign for the Philadelphia native. Wendy Hutchinson and Meghan McGlinchey also earned the honor on the women's team.
“To have three individuals make the A-10 All-Academic team is a great accolade for not only those three individuals but for our program as well,” head coach Dan Ireland said. “I have always believed that the student-athletes that are doing well in the classroom tend to do the best on the track and this recognition is only further proof of that. Alfredo, Wendy, and Meghan are three individuals that are as committed to their academics just as strongly as they are committed to their athletics.”
“This is a great honor to not only achieve athletic success but academic success as well,” Santana said. “It is a testament to every athlete on any All-Academic team of their hard work on and off the track. The balancing act that is school and athletics is not an easy one to master but when you do master it is an amazing feeling to be recognized for the hard work.”
Santana was recognized as Performer of the Meet at the Indoor Championships this season after placing first in both the 3000m (8:24.42) and the 5000m (14:24.44). The senior scored 20 team points for the Blue and Gold, accounting for one-third of the squad's scoring in the fifth place finish.
The Nueva Esperanza product carries a 3.18 GPA as a psychology major. He has received A-10 Academic All-Conference accolades in back to back years in cross country as well.
