Penn Handles Explorers, 5-3

PHILADELPHIA – The Explorers held Penn scoreless until the sixth, but the Quakers scored five runs in their last four at bats en route to a 5-3 victory over La Salle on Wednesday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. Sophomore Mark Williams extended his reached base streak to 14 games with a 3-for-5 showing and freshman Joey Ravert (3-3, BB, HBP) picked up his seventh hit in consecutive days.

Penn improves to 19-11 on the year while the Explorers dip to 12-18. La Salle freshman Tom Fazzini was given the first loss of his college career after forfeiting two runs in two-thirds of an inning in relief while Penn reliever Mitch Holtz picked up his first win on the season.

La Salle scored the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the second when freshman Dan Callahan (0-1, RBI) skied a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Williams from third.

Williams started the game on the bump for the Blue and Gold and worked five scoreless innings while striking out three and walking none. Sophomore Alec Baum and junior Dominic Sgroi worked the sixth inning, each giving being charged with a run when Ryan Deitrich clubbed a two-run homer over the left field wall.

The Explorers tied up the game in the bottom of the frame when Williams plated sophomore Justin Korenblatt (2-4) from first on a double in the right center gap. Williams ended the day with 14 RBI on the year, most on the squad.

The Quaker bats continued to get to the Explorer bullpen, picking up two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to open a 5-2 lead. La Salle cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth when freshman Collin McGowan (1-3, RBI) doubled down the right field line to score junior George Smith, Jr. (0-5), who reached on a fielders' choice earlier in the inning.

Smith, Jr. popped up with the bases loaded in the ninth to end the ballgame. Penn's Ronnie Glenn picked up his sixth save of the season.

The Blue and Gold will begin another local A-10 set on Friday, when they travel to Hawk Hill to take on Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m.

NOTES: Williams is batting .423 (22-52) over his current 14 game reached base streak. He now leads the squad in batting average (.352), slugging percentage (.521), on-base percentage (.432), and RBI (14)…Callahan notched his first career RBI on Wednesday on his second inning sacrifice fly...Ravert is 8-for-11 in his last three games, upping his season average from .237 to .314
