PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team dropped a 7-4 decision to Penn State on Tuesday evening in University Park, buried by a four-run eighth inning from the Nittany Lions to put the game away. The Explorers fell to 18-20 on the season while Penn State improved to 11-25.

Sophomore Justin Korenblatt (2-4, 2 runs) led off the top of the second with a bunt for a base hit, followed by a Mark Williams (1-3, RBI, run) RBI double to get the Explorers on the board. The Nittany Lions countered for a three-spot in the bottom of the third, a 3-1 margin which held to the seventh.

With a 3-2 count and the sacks full, sophomore Ryan Welling (1-2, 2 RBI) poked a single through the left side, plating two Explorers to tie the ballgame at three apiece.

The Penn State offense exploded in the bottom of the eighth with a four-run output to open up a 7-3 lead which they would not relinquish.

Senior Dan Klem (2-4, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth to cut the deficit to 7-4, but sophomore Kevin Baron (0-4) stranded three Explorers with a pop out to end the ballgame.

Freshman Alex Faust made the start on the hill for La Salle, giving up three earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. Freshman Austin Clark (2.2 IP) and junior Dominic Sgroi (1.1 IP) combined for four scoreless innings in relief before Williams was tagged for four runs (three earned) in the eighth, dipping his season record to 0-3.

The Explorers welcome A-10 rival VCU to DeVincent Field on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the first of a three game series.
