PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team pounded out 11 hits but mustered up only two runs in a 5-2 VCU win on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. Senior
Dan Klem registered a 3-for-4 day at the dish to extend his multi-hit game streak to four. Sophomore
Shane Hollman (5.1 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) took the loss for the Explorers, as his season record dipped to 3-4.
La Salle fell to 20-21 (13-5 A-10) with the loss while the Rams improve to 21-21 (6-9) on the campaign.
After tossing a 1-2-3 inning in the first, Hollman surrendered two runs in the top of the second, but worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the floodgates from opening. La Salle got one back in the fourth when sophomore
Kevin Conroy (1-4, RBI, run) smashed a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his first homer of the season.
The Explorers tied the game up in the fifth when
Dan Klem roped an 0-1 breaking ball to the right center gap to plate sophomore
Ryan Welling (1-4, run), who led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
VCU added two runs in the sixth and another in the ninth to give reliever Logan Kanuik plenty of breathing room for a four inning save. Seth Greene was credited with the victory, hurling five innings of two-run ball.
The Explorers left runners on in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings and were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position. La Salle stranded seven runners on the afternoon while the Rams stranded 15. In addition, the Blue and Gold were charged with two fielding errors and two unearned runs, the first time since last Sunday they had registered more than one error in a ballgame.
The La Salle bullpen effectively worked 3.2 innings in relief, forfeiting only one unearned run in the ninth. Freshman
Joey Ravert hurled 2.1 innings to keep the game within striking distance for the Explorers.
The Blue and Gold will play again on Friday, May 3 at Delaware at 3 p.m. They will play in Newark again on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. before returning to DeVincent Field one last time this season on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
