Explorers And Colonials Duke It Out In Final Conference Weekend


PHILADELPHIA – Winners of its last five Atlantic 10 series, the La Salle baseball team will visit George Washington over the weekend for its final regular season conference set. The Explorers find themselves in a tie for second with Saint Louis in the A-10 standings at 15-6 while the Colonials come in tied for seventh with Saint Joseph's at 12-9.

Explorer Notes
  • The Explorers current mark of 15 A-10 wins broke the program's previous conference wins mark of 14, set in 2010.
  • La Salle took two of three from the Colonials in their meetings last season and registered a clean three-game sweep over GW the previous year.
  • After starting the season 2-11, the Blue and Gold have posted a 22-13 record after returning from spring break.
  • As a team, the Explorers are batting .279 in conference games, the fourth best tally in the league.
  • Over its last seven games, the La Salle pitching staff has notched a 2.85 ERA, limiting opponents to a .210 batting average against clip.
  • Senior Pat Christensen has racked up 11 saves this season, most in the conference. His 44 career save mark is tied for fifth-most in NCAA Division I history. In A-10 play, Christensen has posted the conference's best marks in ERA (0.69), appearances (13), and saves (10).
  • Sophomore Kevin Conroy was named Big 5 Player of the Week for May 13 after posting a 1.662 OPS over the weekend in La Salle's series win over St. Bonaventure. Conroy has driven in four runs over his last four games and leads the club in RBI (27) and multiple RBI games (7).
  • Sophomore Mark Williams is batting .377 in conference play, the fourth-best mark in the league. Williams also ranks in the top five in A-10 play in doubles (10) and slugging percentage (.558).
  • Senior Dan Klem is batting .368 in conference games, the sixth-highest figure in the A-10. His 32 hits in conference play are the second-highest tally in the league. He has notched 17 multiple hit games on the season, the best figure on the club.
  • Sophomore Justin Korenblatt is riding a nine game reached base streak, the longest current figure on the squad. Korenblatt's five triples on the season are good for a three-way tie for most in the A-10.
  • Freshman Austin Clark has posted an 0.56 ERA over his last 12 outings (16 innings) and has picked up three wins, all in relief.
  • Junior Dominic Sgroi has appeared in 24 games this season, the third highest mark in the league. Sgroi has given up only one earned run over his last 10 appearances.

Colonial Notes
  • GW (22-30, 12-9 A-10) has won seven of its last eight league games and three consecutive Atlantic 10 series entering the final weekend.
  • Last weekend, the Colonials won two-of-three games from VCU to stay in the hunt for their first postseason berth since the 2006 season.
  • Senior Justin Albright  carries an eight-game hit streak into the final weekend. The two-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and GW's Most Valuable Player has also reached base safely in each of the last 18 games. During the 18-game stretch, he is batting .438 with seven doubles, 10 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. 
  • Albright leads the Colonials in several offensive categories including batting average (.310), runs (26), doubles (11) and walks (24). He also ranks fourth in the A-10 and tied for 27th in Division I with 24 stolen bases.
  • Senior Tyler McCarthy has hit safely in each of his past nine games to raise his batting average to .275. The senior right fielder is batting .375 during the streak with three doubles and four RBIs.
  • GW's pitching staff boasts a 7-2 record and 3.04 ERA across its last three Atlantic 10 series. Junior Luke Staub has yielded just four earned runs in his past 16.1 innings of A-10 work while freshman Bobby LeWarne and senior Kenny O'Brien have anchored the bullpen. LeWarne has totaled 11 strikeouts and a 2.08 ERA in four relief appearances while O'Brien is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in five appearances (one start) in the last nine conference games.
