ARLINGTON, Va. – The La Salle baseball team scored three early runs but George Washington countered with 10 of the next 11 in a 10-4 Colonials win on Thursday afternoon at Barcroft Park. Sophomore Mark Williams smacked his second career homer in the ballgame, posting a 3-4 line while driving in all four Explorer runs.

With two men on in the first, Williams deposited a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center, driving home sophomore Kevin Baron (1-3) and sophomore Kevin Conroy (3-5). Baron and Conroy notched back-to-back singles with one out in the inning to get aboard.

The Colonials (23-30, 13-9 A-10) wasted no time getting right back in the thick of things, tagging La Salle starter Shawn O'Neill for four runs in the first inning, although only one was earned. The home team proceeded to add one in the second, one in the third, and three more in the fourth to open up a commanding 9-3 bulge. O'Neill lasted only 3.1 innings and was charged with four earned runs on eight hits.

La Salle (24-25, 15-7 A-10) inched closer in the fifth when Williams tripled home Baron on an 0-2 pitch to close the gap to 9-4. The Blue and Gold did not manage to push another run across the remainder of the afternoon.

The Colonials got to freshman Austin Clark for a run in the seventh, ending their scoring output for the day. Clark worked three innings in relief before handing the ball to freshman Tom Fazzini, who threw 1.2 unblemished frames.

Usually a sure-handed squad, the Explorers fumbled two balls in the field, giving GW five unearned runs in the contest. For the game, the Colonials outhit the visitors 13-11.

The Explorers will get another crack at their A-10 foe tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Shane Hollman will get the start and will be opposed by GW's Aaron Weisberg.
