ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington Colonials used a pair of unearned runs in the eighth to squeeze out a 3-1 victory over La Salle on Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park. The Blue and Gold outhit the home team 8-7 but stranded nine baserunners, failing to capitalize on run scoring opportunities.
The Colonials (24-30, 14-9 A-10) struck in the first, using a hit-by-pitch and a single to take a 1-0 edge. GW would not touch La Salle starter
Shane Hollman the rest of his outing, throwing six innings while giving up four hits and only the one earned run.
The Explorers (24-26, 15-8 A-10) pushed across their lone run in the fifth. Sophomore
Kevin Baron (2-4, run) smacked a single up the middle with one out and stole second base. After a
Kevin Conroy (0-4) flyout, sophomore
Justin Korenblatt plated Baron on an RBI single to left field to even the score at one apiece.
Each team posted zeroes on the scoreboard until the Colonials cracked the game open in the eighth. Nolan Lodden led off the inning and reached on a fielding error by second baseman
Collin McGowan. After a sacrifice bunt and a single by Tyler McCarthy, sophomore
Adam Cherry was replaced by senior
Pat Christensen with runners on first and third. McCarthy stole second and touched home on a two-run single by Xavier Parkmond, which put the Colonials up 3-1.
La Salle was retired quietly in the ninth to seal the victory for GW. Cherry (1-1) took the loss for the Explorers while Kenny O'Brien (4-1) earned the win for the home team.
The two teams will collide again tomorrow afternoon at high noon in the final regular season conference game of the campaign.
