PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer team dropped a 5-3 decision on Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium at the hands of Loyola (Md.). Senior Jason Plumhoff netted two goals for the Explorers and senior Glenroy Chapman added another.
Â
Loyola (Md.) (1-0-1) owned the first half, finding the back of the net three times in the match's first 18 minutes. With senior goalkeeper John McCarthy out due to injury, sophomore Mike Kirk was pressed into action for his first career start. He made six saves in the contest.
Â
La Salle (0-1-1) broke its first half slumber right from the jump in the second period when Chapman cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 48th minute, finding the right corner of the net off a Plumhoff assist. The Greyhounds answered, however, three minutes later to all but put the game out of reach.
Â
Plumhoff then took things into his own hands, scoring in the 57th and 71st minute to bring the match within one. The first was of the header variety, as freshman Matt Robinson tallied his first career assist on a nifty chip. Senior Andrew Lill assisted on Plumhoff's second offering.
Â
Loyola (Md.) made it 5-3 in the 79th minute when Connor Thompson scored his second goal of the game in what proved to be the final tally in the high scoring affair.
Â
The visitors edged the Explorers in the shots on goal department by an 11-6 count.
Â
La Salle will look to bounce back on Sunday when they travel to Bucknell for a 2 PM match.
