OLEAN, N.Y. – La Salle had its five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night at St. Bonaventure, 66-51, at the Reilly Center. Seniors
Tyreek Duren and
Tyrone Garland led the Explorers with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
"That was probably one of our poorest performances of the year, but St. Bonaventure had everything to do with it," head coach
Dr. John Giannini said. "I told the team that we played bad, but we don't have bad players. We're extremely disappointed but St. Bonaventure had everything to do with it."
Garland's three-pointer with 16:37 to play tied the game at 37-37 before the Bonnies slowly pulled away. The hosts stretched the advantage to 10 points at 55-45 with 10:05 to play and led by as many as 18 points with 1:20 left.
"We didn't stop anyone in the second half," Giannini said.
SBU was led by Charlon Kloof, who scored 18 points and dished seven assists, while Marquise Simmons and Matthew Wright each added 10.
The Explorers (11-7, 3-1 A-10) struggled taking care of the ball with 17 turnovers and made just 3-for-17 from behind the arc. The Blue and Gold also shot a season-low 30.0% from the field.
Duren's 16 points allowed him to become the 20
th Explorer to pass the 1,500-point mark. He now has 1,515 points as an Explorer.
The Explorers had a difficult time reaching Olean, N.Y. due to the foot of snow that fell upon Philadelphia on Tuesday. La Salle bussed to Western New York after its chartered flight was cancelled, arriving in Olean at 2:00 AM.
But Giannini said that the fatigue didn't have that much effect on his team.
"I don't think we were fatigued to that degree," Giannini said. "Our passing had nothing to do with fatigue. Our lack of execution against their zone was stunning especially for the veteran team we have."
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak against SBU (12-7, 2-3 A-10).
The Explorers will play host to VCU on Saturday at noon on ESPN2. Tickets are available by visiting
