Rowing Competes In Navy Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's and women's rowing teams were back in action this weekend for their first race of the year on the Schuylkill River, as they competed in the annual Navy Day Regatta.

On the men's side, the novice eight led the pack with an eighth place finish in its race out of 28 boats. The Explorers clocked a 13:54.07, edging the Navy 'B' boat which finished in 13:56.20. Penn 'A' captured the win with a time of 12:54.54. The novice eight was coxed by Grant Maddock and rowed by Jake Fabel, Kieran Hughes, Zach LaBarth, Harrison Gargel, Kyle Adams, Brendan Mason, Waleed Omar and Kris Walls.

The men's junior varsity eight finished 12th, beating Penn State in the 13-boat race. The Explorers crossed the finish line in 14:49.48, outlasting the Nittany Lions who took 15:20.49 to complete the race. Penn 'A' won with a time of 12:39.05 and Navy 'A' and 'B' finished 2-3. The Explorers' boat was coxed by Emily Giergerich, and rowed by James Boney, Josh Brooks, Mike Gormley, Russell Carter, Kyle Delgado, Kyle Roller, Antonio Stephens and Jeff Waldin.

The varsity eight wrapped up the day in the afternoon, finishing 21st of 27 boats. The Explorers clocked a 13:55.19 to beat Loyola (14:00.17). Penn 'A' eked out a victory over Navy with a time of 12:11.81. The V8 was coxed by Angelie Itaas, and rowed by Jack Schall, Matt Cardin, Marqus Brown, Bill Smith, Kevin Sullivan, Sean McGettigan, Nick McGloin and Kenny Roller.

On the women's side, the varsity four, junior varsity eight and varsity eight boats were in action. The V4 finished 20th out of 23 boats with a time of 18:32.97. The Explorer were nearly a minute ahead of the next finisher, Catholic University, which clocked a 19:29.99. Penn took the top two spots, with the 'A' boat winning in 15:59.86. The V4 was coxed by Kaitlyn Reyes, and rowed by Tara Puhalski, Karli Libbey, Sofia Iaconelli and Amanda Ryan.

The women's JV8 finished 10th out of 12 boats, clocking a 16:36.56 to finish nearly 20 seconds ahead of 11th-place Penn State. Navy 'B' captured the win with a time of 14:52.38. The JV8 was coxed by Lindsey Prychka, and rowed by Katie Van Stone, Emma Merrick, Briana Riccelli, Brooke Spence, Savannah Fader, Francesca Bryce, Erika Gonzalez and Gianna Harris-Campbell.

The varsity eight finished 14th out of 16 boats, clocking a 15:26.46 to top Philly U by just over four seconds. Navy won the race in 14:03.30. The V8 was coxed by Reyes, and rowed by Libbey, Puhalski, Ryan, Cora Jones, Catherine Goldschmidt, Kirsten Kershbaumer, Maura McKenna and Iaconelli.

The Explorers return to the water in two weeks when they compete in the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday, Oct. 25.
