Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls 3-1 To UMass

PHILADELPHIA - Gina Smith broke up a Massachusetts shutout bid with less than five minutes remaining, but a 67th minute UMass goal squelched a comeback attempt as La Salle field hockey dropped a 3-1 game at DeVincent Field on Friday.

The Explorers (8-7, 4-3 Atlantic 10) withstood a 15-5 UMass shot advantage in the first half as keeper Rachel Hartman made 10 of her 12 saves before the break. UMass (9-8, 6-1 Atlantic 10) managed just one goal in the half, a Renee Suter score at 26:13 which proved to be the game winner.

Izzie Delario added a goal to put the visitors up 2-0 in the 46th minute.

Smith attempted to spark another comeback for the Explorers, deflecting in a Devin Muracco shot with just 4:20 remaining in the contest. However, Delario punched in her second goal just one minute later on a breakaway to put the game out of reach.

The Explorers had one last opportunity to score on a penalty corner on expired time, but the ball deflected off a body into the goal which was ruled a no-goal.

The Minutewomen outshot the Explorers 26-12 for the game and took eight penalty corners to the Explorers' six.

La Salle keeper Rachel Hartman  recorded 12 saves, 10 of which came in the first half. UMass keeper Sam Carlino needed five saves to earn the win.

The Explorers remain home on Sunday as they host Bryant in a nonconference game at noon. The annual senior day ceremony will take place at approximately 11:45 am.
