PHILADELPHIA - La Salle freshman
Kendall Kreider struck for both goals as the Explorers upended VCU 2-1 in Atlantic 10 action at DeVincent Field on Friday afternoon.
With the two scores, Kreider doubled her season goal total and now leads the Explorers (5-4, 2-1 A-10) in points with nine.
La Salle also stayed perfect at home, moving to 4-0 on the season while playing at DeVincent Field.
"I think our whole team played a really good game today," Kreider said. "We knew VCU was going to be very good ocmpetition. All we had to do as come out with high intensity and play our game, and that's exactly what we did."
VCU (1-8, 0-3 A-10) broke up the shutout bid in the 57th minute on a Spencer Tossone goal.
The two squads played even ball early, staying around midfield as each team got off only one shot apiece in the first 20 minutes of the game. The La Salle offense picked up after that point, with Kreider breaking the scoreless tie with just 1:15 until halftime.
Emily Vasey took a shot which was saved, but Kreider picked up the rebound and drained what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Both squads picked up in the second half, combining for 17 shots after the break compared to just seven in the first stanza. Kreider added her second score of the game in the 53rd minute, taking a pass from
Sophie Lozowski about 25 yards out and running it in for the insurance goal.
VCU's Tossone put back a rebound off a Kendell Combs shot that hit the post in the 57th minute.
Rachel Hartman grabbed another win in goal, making six saves. VCU's Kendall Clifton also made six saves in the effort.
La Salle outshot VCU 14-10, and both squads picked up three penalty corners.
The Explorers remain at home on Sunday, hosting Richmond at noon.
