PHILADELPHIA - Regardless of outcome, a streak would have been broken today. La Salle entered the game with a 4-0 home record, while Richmond came in 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play. With two
Maddy Tettelbach goals in the second half, it was the Explorers' streak that stayed intact as the squad won its fifth home game in as many opportunities, upsetting the Spiders 2-1 at DeVincent Field on Sunday afternoon.
The win moves the Explorers to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the A-10. Richmond drops to 7-5 overall, 3-1 A-10.
Rachel Hartman, who came into the weekend ranked fourth nationally in save percentage, continued to shine as she made 11 saves on the day.
"I couldn't be more proud of our team today," Head Coach
Michelle Marks said. "We ended the game the way we started - with a lot of heart and passion. We played a complete 70-minute game as a unit and competed with a lot of intensity."
"This is a huge win for this team and program and adds a lot of momentum heading into our games versus St. Francis and Temple. I'm extremely proud of this group of players," Marks added.
The two squads played terrific defense at the outset, keeping the ball between the two 25-yard lines for much of the first half. Richmond broke through just 40 seconds before halftime when Kasey Gilbride caught a rebound of a Taylor Deitrick shot and hit it up into the left side of the cage.
The Explorers came out of the halftime break fired up, and it took just less than six minutes for the squad to get on the board.
Emily Vasey took a shot that hit off Richmond keeper Kelley Wentling's pads, and Tettelbach picked it up in the middle of a scramble for the goal at the 40:50 mark.
Both squads had strong opportunities down the stretch, with momentum shifting back and forth. The Explorers fended off four straight Spider penalty corner attempts in a three-minute span from 55:15 to 58:40, and Hartman picked up three saves in that span. After that, the Explorer offense picked back up and were awarded the final three penalty corners of the game.Â
Tettelbach's game winner came with under three minutes remaining, and off of that final penalty corner. She took the corner, sending the ball in to
Olivia Leaman who took a shot that ricocheted off the left post. Tettelbach was there once again for the rebound, nailing the goal with 2:37 left in the game.
The Explorers edged the Spiders 18-16 in shots, while the Spiders held a slim 7-6 lead on penalty corners.
The Explorers head on the road for four straight games, starting next Friday at St. Francis (Pa.) before returning to Philly to play a nonconference game at Temple on Sunday.
