La Salle Rowing Captures Two Wins In Season Opener At Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Both the men's and women's rowing teams picked up a win each as the Explorers opened the fall season on Saturday at Penn State. The Explorers rowed against the host Nittany Lions and against Susquehanna University.

Saturday's format included one varsity eight race each for the men and the women. Three La Salle men's boats were entered along with two women's boats.

On the men's side, the 'B' boat captured the win by clocking a time of 13:59, outlasting Penn State's 'A' boat by six seconds (14:05). The Explorers' 'A' boat finished third in a time of 14:19, followed by the 'C' boat in 14:42. Susquehanna's lone men's entry came in fifth (14:51) and Penn State's 'B' boat rounded out the race in 15:21.

The men's 'A' lineup included coxswain Angelie Itaas along with rowers Marqus Brown, Matt Cardin, Kevin Sullivan, Bill Smith, Nick McGloin, Sean McGettigan, Jack Schall and Kenny Roller. The 'B' boat was raced by coxswain Grant Maddock and rowers Jake Fabel, Kieran Hughes, Zach LaBarth, Harrison Gargel, Kyle Adams, Brendan Mason, Waleed Omar and Kris Walls. The 'C' boat included coxswain Emily Giegerich and rowers James Boney, Jeff Waldin, Mike Gormley, Russell Carter, Kyle Delgado, Kyle Roller, Antonio Stephens and Josh Brooks.

On the women's side, the 'B' boat - which contained the squad's first varsity eight - captured the win with a time of 16:14. Penn State 'A' came in second with a time of 16:41, followed by the Explorers JV8 racing as the 'A' boat. That boat clocked a 17:19. Penn State 'B' was fourth by finishing in 17:33, and Susquehanna rounded out the finishers with a time of 17:48. The winning boat consisted of coxswain Katie Reyes, along with Karli Libbey, Tara Pulhalski, Amanda Ryan, Cora Jones, Catherine Goldschmidt, Kirsten Kershbaumer, Amanda Schwarz and Sofia Iaconelli. The JV8 was coxed by Lindsey Prychka and rowed by Maura McKenna, Emma Merrick, Briana Riccelli, Savannah Fader, Erika Gonzalez, Francesca Bryce, Jackie Gonzalez and Gianna Harris-Campbell.

The 2014-15 Explorers return to Philadelphia next weekend for the annual Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
