PHILADELPHIA – Penn jumped out to an early double-digit lead and maintained the advantage down the stretch as the La Salle women's basketball squad fell 57-29 to the Quakers at the Palestra on Wednesday evening.
The Explorers (0-2, 0-2 Big 5) were hampered by 22.0 percent shooting from the floor, including 0-for-11 from long range.
Siobhan Beslow led the team with seven points, thanks to a 5-for-6 showing at the free throw line.
Penn's Sydney Stipanovich led all players with 15 points and 15 rebounds, and was the only player in the game to reach double figures in scoring.
The Quakers (1-1, 1-0 Big 5) built a 23-8 lead midway through the first half, as the home squad came out firing over 55 percent from the floor. They cooled off considerably late in the first period, but that early burst allowed them to withstand a long cold stretch in the second stanza. Both squads combined to hit just two of their first 13 field goal attempts after the break, and the rim did not get much friendlier for either squad through the remainder of the game.
The Explorers return to action on Saturday in the squad's home opener against Howard at 4:30 pm.
