Whelan Named Academic All-Atlantic 10

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Jennifer Whelan was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team as announced by the conference Thursday afternoon. Whelan repeats as a member of the team, as she also earned the honor following her junior season.

"Jen Whelan is the epitome of what a "student-athlete" should be," said Coach Caitlin Rimgaila. "She has set the academic bar high for our team and the standard for what La Salle volleyball expects out of our student athletes."

Whelan was second on the team with 216 kills on the year averaging nearly 2 kills per set. She tallied the most kills of any of her four seasons on campus and produced her best hitting percentage of her career and of anyone on the team with a .257 rate on the year. Whelan also added in 24 service aces on the year which was third best on the team and helped the team finish the regular season with the third most service aces of any team in the country.

"Jen works hard every day not only on the court but in the classroom," added Coach Rimgaila. "Her dedication and commitment to both academics and her sport have offered her opportunities to be a standout amongst her peers not only here at La Salle but throughout the entire NCAA."

Whelan was honored with a first team academic all-district distinction earlier this season and is up for Academic All-American. The Warminster, Pa. native has a cumulative 3.96 GPA as a nursing major. She is the vice president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and a member of the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania.
