VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova used a 19-3 run spanning the last 10 minutes of the first period to take a 32-15 halftime lead and cruised to the eventual 70-36 score as the La Salle women's basketball team saw its win streak halted at six on Sunday night at The Pavilion.
Micahya Owens was the lone Explorer in double figures, hitting 14 points and recording a game-high four steals.
Taylor Holeman led a trio of Wildcats in double figures with 16 while pulling down a game-high nine boards. Lauren Burford and Caroline Coyer chipped in 11 points apiece.
The Explorers (6-3, 0-3 Big 5) were hampered by cold shooting throughout, going just 20.7 percent (12-for-58) from the field for the game. They hit just 1-for-11 from three-point range.
The squad trailed just one at 12-11 with 11:45 on the clock, but an Emily Leer free throw at 11:21 and layup at 10:01 sparked the 19-3 run that lasted through the buzzer at the half.
The Explorers scored the first four points of the second half, including a
Siobhan Beslow layup-and-one and an Owens free throw. The Wildcats (3-6, 1-1 Big 5) responded with a 10-0 run over the next 5:16 to put the game out of reach and deflate chances of another second-half run as the team did against William & Mary last Saturday.
Villanova went 50.0 percent from the field, and 7-for-16 from long range. The Wildcats also owned the boards, 47-32.
The Explorers head to Atlanta next weekend for a two-game set at Georgia State's Holiday & Hoops Classic. They face Ohio University on Friday at 7 pm and play host Georgia State on Saturday at 6 pm.
