Explorers Rally Past Georgia State, 76-68

ATLANTA - La Salle broke a late tie with a 13-5 run to close the game as the Explorers took a 76-68 win over host Georgia State in the finale of the Georgia State Holiday & Hoops Classic on Saturday night.

Micahya Owens and Amy Griffin were named to the All-Classic Team. Owens led the Explorers with 20 points in the win over the Panthers tonight, and Griffin poured in a career-high 20 in Friday night's game.

Indigo Dickens was the other Explorer in double figures tonight, pouring in a career-high 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Dickens scored eight of the team's 13 points in that deciding run in the final eight minutes of the game.

Alicia Cropper and Jasmine Alston dished out a game-high seven assists apiece, and the Explorers racked up 19 assists in the game to tie their season high. Assists have been key in the Explorers' seven wins, as they average 14.3 helpers in wins to just 7.8 per game in their four losses.

The Explorers also committed a season-low nine turnovers, while forcing 14 Panther miscues.

A pair of Georgia State players hit the 20-point mark, led by Makeba Ponder's 22. Brittany Logan added 20, fueled by a perfect 10-for-10 showing at the free throw line. Logan recorded a double-double, pulling down a game-best 11 rebounds.

After an early 10-10 tie, the Explorers opened up a 13-2 run to take an 11-point 23-12 lead at 11:47. They held an 11-point lead on three more occasions, the last being a 37-26 lead with 6:23 until halftime.

The Panthers responded with a 12-1 run to close out the half and knot the score at 38-38 at the break.

GSU's Kayla Nolan scored the first bucket after the break to give the home squad its first lead since early in the first half. They held the lead through the majority of the second stanza, though the Explorers stayed within two possessions the entire way. With the Panthers up 60-56 with 6:00 on the clock, the Explorers got the breakthrough they needed when Owens and Dickens teamed up for a back-to-back three-pointer and layup to regain the lead at 61-60.

Ponder responded with a three-pointer to put GSU back on top, but Dickens came up huge with back-to-back layups in the paint to put the Explorers up for good.

The Explorers made nine of their 10 free throws down the stretch, pushing the lead to as many as 10 at 76-66. GSU's Ashley Watson made a basket with four seconds left for the final 76-68 score.

La Salle got 22 points from its bench in the second half, and the Explorer reserves outscored the Georgia State bench 30-11.

After hitting eight of their first 13 field goal attempts, the Explorers cooled off but finished with a 38.5 percent clip. They went 35.0 percent (7-for-20) from long range. Georgia State shot 43.4 percent overall, while the Explorers limited the Panthers to 27.3 percent (3-for-11) from three.
