PHILADELPHIA - Two
Amy Griffin free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining iced the game as the La Salle women's basketball squad outlasted UMBC 65-62 at Tom Gola Arena on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Explorers wrap up nonconference play with a 9-4 record, the most number of nonconference wins since 2008-09.
Micahya Owens led the Explorers with 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half.
Alicia Cropper added 15 points and seven rebounds, and
Siobhan Beslow pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and chipped in six points.
UMBC's Capree Garner, who leads the America East Conference in scoring, led all scorers with 22 points. Dana Lewis added 14 on 6-for-8 shooting, and Taylor McCarley added 13 for the Retrievers (5-7).
The Explorers shot just 31.3 percent to UMBC's 48.0 percent, but were helped by a 7-for-16 showing from long range. They limited UMBC to just 1-for-5 from three.
La Salle led for all but six minutes of the game, but a pesky UMBC squad stayed close throughout. The Explorers took their largest lead of 11 when they led 50-39. The Retrievers got back within seven twice before a Griffin three at 8:18 put the Explorers back up by 10 at 55-45.Â
UMBC answered with an 18-7 run capped by the two Lewis free throws with five seconds left, but Griffin's free throws and a lack of time sealed the game for the Explorers as the Retrievers could not get off an equalizer attempt in time.
The Explorers won the battle of the boards 45-34, and forced UMBC into 21 turnovers.
The squad returns to action after the new year, opening Atlantic 10 play at Davidson on Sunday (1/4) at 2 pm.
