Baseball Drops a Pair at Campbell on Sunday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The La Salle baseball team dropped the front and back end of Sunday's doubleheader, falling 9-4 and 10-6 to Campbell at Jim Perry Stadium. The Camels swept the three-game series after defeating the Blue & Gold 9-2 on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE
Campbell (3-0) scored early and often in game one, piling on nine runs through the first six innings. Shane Hollman (0-1) made the start on the mound for the Explorers, and was charged with four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out five and walked one.

The home team proceeded to pick up five more runs against La Salle's bullpen, touching up Joey Ravert (1.2 IP, 2 ER) and Dominic Sgroi (0.1 IP, 3 ER) in relief stints. Collin McGowan (1.1 IP, 0 ER) and Adam Cherry (1 IP, 0 ER) each registered clean outings for the Explorers.

La Salle's (0-3) bats burst out of hibernation in the ninth by posting a four-spot on the scoreboard. Joey Monzo (0-0, HBP) pinch hit for George Smith Jr (1-2, BB) with one out and was hit by a pitch. He then advanced to third on a Jack Meeker (1-1, R) single. After a balk and a pair of walks to Dan Callahan (0-0, BB, R) and Justin Korenblatt (1-3, BB, R), Cameron Johnson (3-5, RBI) and pinch hitter JT Crits (1-1, RBI) eached picked up RBI singles. A Josh Savakinus (1-4, BB, RBI) walk with two outs plated Korenblatt which cut the deficit to five, the final result.

Campbell's Hector Cedano (1-0) earned the win, tossing five goose eggs on the board.

For the game, the Camels outhit the Explorers 15-9. Three Camels registered multi-hit games.

GAME TWO
La Salle struck first in the night cap, picking up an unearned run in the second inning when George Smith Jr (0-2, RBI) drove in Jack Meeker (1-4, 2 R) on a fly ball to left field. Meeker reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to lead off the inning.

Campbell picked up a single run in the third, fourth, and fifth inning to open up a 3-1 lead.

The Explorers then batted around in the top of the sixth. Kevin Baron (1-5, R) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Cameron Johnson (1-4, R) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop with one out. RBI singles by Joey Ravert (1-4, RBI, R), Meeker, and Josh Savakinus (1-3, RBI, R) consecutively put the Explorers on top 4-3. Three batters later, following a Ryan Welling (0-3, BB) walk and Smith Jr strikeout, pinch hitter Kevin Conroy (1-2, 2 RBI) laced a single to center field as Meeker and Savakinus touched home.

Down 6-3, the home team wasted little time getting back in the driver's seat. They countered with a five run bottom of the sixth to retake the lead, 8-6. A single run in the seventh and eighth innings sealed the Explorers' fate.

Alex Faust (0-0) made the start on the hill for the Blue & Gold, throwing three innings of one-run ball. Freddy Andujar (0-1) took the loss after being charged for all five runs in the pivotal sixth inning.

Campbell's Ryan Thompson (1-0) earned the win in relief (3.2 IP, 0 ER).

The Camels collected 11 hits in the game while the Explorers had seven. Campbell made three fielding errors, contributing to four of La Salle's six runs being unearned.

The Explorers will look to get in the win column next weekend at the Blue Devil Classic. They open up the weekend against Duke on Friday at 3 PM.
