KINGSTON, R.I. – Alfredo Santana ran a 14:47.54 in the 5000 meter run on Saturday afternoon at the Atlantic 10 Championships, placing first for the second consecutive year in the event. The Explorers tallied 31 team points on Saturday at the Mackal Fieldhouse and are positioned third heading into Sunday.
"It feels great," Santana said after the race. "The competition is always fierce in the A-10 so I'm really happy to come out with the win."
Santana blazed the trail for two of his teammates in the 5k,
Nico Greco and
Ian Barnhill, who finished second and fourth, respectively. Greco posted a 14:48.54 while Barnhill crossed the finish line at 14:49.17.
The distance medley relay team placed second with a 10:02.03 in a hotly contested race.
Zach Sullivan,
Justin Fowler,
Nick Ross, and
Vince Perozze combined to clock the time.
Freshman
Chris Sanders posted the top time in the 800-meter qualifier, clocking a 1:55.15. He will be joined in the finals tomorrow by teammate
Chris Trimble (1:56.64, 5
th place).
Three Explorers qualified for Sunday's final in the 1000 meter run, paced by a first place effort by
Kevin Day (2:31.50).
John Pujols ran a 2:32.18 (5
th) and
Brendan Robertson registered a 2:32.67 (8
th).
Joshua Byrd posted a 50.94 in the 400-meter dash, coming in 11
th. In the 500-meter run,
Kevin Grosso finished 11
th (1:06.89) while
Cris Hunter came in 15
th (1:08.42).
Francis Mancho came in 11
th in the long jump with a 6.36m. He also placed ninth in the 60-meter dash with a 7.12.
La Salle trails only Rhode Island (51 points) and George Mason (40 points) heading into finals on Sunday. Action resumes at 9:00 AM.
