DURHAM, N.C. – In his second career start on the mound,
Joey Ravert gave up only one unearned run in 7.2 innings and earned the win as La Salle defeated Saint Louis, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. Ravert limited the defending Atlantic 10 champions to three hits in the outing while striking out five and walking two.
Kevin Baron (1-2, 2 R, 3 BB) led off the game with a walk and scored when
Cameron Johnson (2-5, 2 RBI) tripled to right center two batters later. The Explorers added another in the fourth when
Mark Williams (1-3, RBI) singled home
Kevin Conroy (2-4, R), who smacked a double with two outs and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
In the top of the fifth,
Collin McGowan (0-3, R, BB) and Baron worked back-to-back walks to open the frame.
Justin Korenblatt (1-3, RBI) singled up the middle to plate McGowan and create a 3-0 lead. The Explorers chased SLU starting pitcher Josh Moore out of the game in the inning. He was charged with the loss after giving up three earned runs in 4.1 innings. Â
SLU cut into the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth when Danny Mannian reached third on an error by Conroy in left field. He later scored on a sacrifice fly. The unearned run was the only Ravert surrendered all afternoon.
The Explorers created another run in the seventh behind a pair of walks by Baron and Korenblatt. Johnson clubbed a double to left center as Baron touched home, putting La Salle up 4-1.
Adam Cherry earned his first save of the year, striking out three in 1.1 unblemished inning to polish off the victory.
For the game, La Salle outhit SLU 7-4. Weather permitting, La Salle will host Lafayette on Tuesday at 3:00 PM. A trip to Western Carolina is on the docket for next weekend.Â
