PHILADELPHIA – The visiting Connecticut Huskies used a nine-run second inning to defeat the La Salle baseball team, 17-1, on Saturday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. After posting four consecutive games of double-digit hits, the Explorer offense mustered up only five on the day against a trio of effective Husky pitchers.

UConn (7-8) took advantage of an erratic Freddy Andujar (L, 0-6), who was unable to escape the second inning. Seven earned runs were changed to his line before exiting the game. He was relieved by Greg Krug who gave up two more in the frame to give the visitors a 9-0 cushion.

La Salle (3-14) scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second. Joey Ravert (1-2, BB, R) and Ryan Welling (0-2, BB) led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Kevin Conroy (0-3) and Kevin Baron (1-4) each recorded outs before George Smith Jr (1-2, 2 BB) poked a single through the left side to load the bases. Cameron Johnson (1-3, BB) whiffed on a two-strike breaking ball that was mishandled by the catcher, allowing Ravert to score from third.

The Huskies recorded a single run in the third, sixth, and eighth innings before registering a five-spot in the ninth to make it 17-1.

Derek Prucnal and Andrew Craig combined for five effective innings of middle relief. Craig fanned two batters in 2.2 innings of work.

UConn's Anthony Marzi (2-1) took the win, giving up three earned runs in five innings. He struck out six and walked six.

The Explorers will take on Hartford on Sunday at noon as part of the Big 5 Baseball Bash.
