PHILADELPHIA – Shawn O'Neill threw six shutout innings and struck out a season-high eight batters as the La Salle baseball team defeated UMass, 3-0, on a brisk Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. O'Neill carried a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings and forfeited only one knock on the afternoon.
"I was really locating my fastball," O'Neill said postgame. "I also felt like I was able to throw my curveball down in the zone which helped me out a lot."
La Salle (4-18, 1-2 A-10) picked up a run in the top of the first inning, using a
Kevin Baron (2-4, R, BB) leadoff single to open up a 1-0 lead. Baron has reached base in every game this season and has reached base safely in 24 consecutive games dating back to last season.
The Explorers iced the game in the top of the eighth, scoring twice by capitalizing on a pair of UMass errors. The 3-0 lead was more than enough for
Adam Cherry, who picked up his third save of the year. He worked two scoreless innings and escaped an inherited jam in the eighth.
Josh Savakinus smacked a season-high four hits and touched home in the eighth inning. As a team, La Salle outhit the Minutemen 10-3.
La Salle will host Lehigh on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in a Liberty Bell Classic game.
