Box Score (PDF)PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle bullpen coughed up five runs in the seventh inning and the George Washington Colonials erased a 6-1 deficit to beat the Explorers, 8-6, on Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
Kevin Baron (3-5, 3 RBI, 2 R) and
Mark Williams (1-3, 3 RBI, R) each bopped homers for the Explorers.
Williams put the Explorers on the board in the first inning when he deposited an 0-2 fastball over the left center field wall to give the Explorers a 3-0 lead. He plated Baron and
George Smith Jr (1-4, R), who led off the frame with back-to-back singles.
La Salle (9-21, 4-4 A-10) added two more in the second and another in the fifth, with Baron responsible for all three runs. He knocked a two-run single in the second and smothered a solo homer down the left field line in the fifth to give the Blue & Gold a 6-1 edge.
The Colonials (10-21, 3-7) picked up a single run in the fourth and sixth innings off La Salle starter
Shane Hollman, though only the run that crossed in the sixth was earned. The right hander tossed six innings while scattering seven hits and exited the game with his team up 6-2.
Mike McLeod and
Tom Fazzini were jolted by the GW sticks in the seventh, however, meandering their way through the frame after giving up five runs. Fazzini (1-2) surrendered the go-ahead run and took the hard-luck loss. Only one of the runs in the frame was earned after
Cameron Johnson was charged with a throwing error.
GW starter Aaron Weisberg (2-5) was rocked early, but settled in nicely and threw 7+ innings for the Colonials. He earned the win, despite giving up six earned runs. He struck out one and walked three in the effort. Colin Milon picked up his fourth save of the year by retiring the last six Explorers of the ballgame.
The squads will clash again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
