Box Score (PDF)PHILADELPHIA – Justin Korenblatt stroked four hits and drove in two runs a 6-4 loss to Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The Hawks scored four in the second and two more in the fourth, which proved to be all the scoring they would need on the afternoon.
Saint Joseph's (24-10, 11-4 A-10) roughed up La Salle starter
Shane Hollman (L, 3-2), who was charged with six runs (five earned) in four innings of work. He scattered six hits while striking out four.
The Explorer bullpen kept the home team in the ballgame, as head coach
Mike Lake used five relievers to record the last 15 outs. The Hawks managed a lone hit and no runs after sending Hollman to the showers.
La Salle (11-26, 6-8 A-10) jumped on Daniel Thorpe (W, 7-0) for a three-spot in the third inning, which cut the deficit to 4-3 at the time. Korenblatt bopped a two RBI triple before Williams drove him home with a ringing double off the left field wall.
Thorpe settled in after his shaky third before being yanked after 6.2 innings. He handed the ball to Lansing Veeder, who recorded the seven-out save.
Cameron Johnson (2-4, RBI, R) hit a solo homer to lead off the ninth which chopped the SJU lead to 6-4. It was the first earned run Veeder had forfeited all season long.
The clubs will play the second game of the weekend series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Joey Ravert will toe the slab for the Blue & Gold and will be opposed by Jordan Carter.
