Box Score (PDF)PHILADELPHIA – In a sloppy game that featured a combined 28 hits and seven errors between the clubs, Saint Joseph's took down the La Salle baseball team, 13-7, on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The Hawks improved to 26-10 (13-4 A-10) on the year while the Explorers dipped to 11-28 (6-10 A-10).
Each club posted three run first innings, but the visitors applied a heavy foot to the gas pedal and led 7-3 after three. SJU battered starter
Shawn O'Neill (L, 4-7), who was charged with nine runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings. He scattered eight hits while striking out three and walking one.
The Explorers added two runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-5. SJU starter Tyler Pallante worked 4.2 innings and was charged with five runs (two earned) while striking out four and walking five. He was relieved by Matt Haskins, who threw 2.1 innings and earned his first win of the year.
Four Explorers recorded multi-hit efforts on the afternoon, paced by three hit days from
Cameron Johnson (3-5, RBI, R) and
George Smith Jr (3-6, RBI, R). In all, the Hawks outhit the home team, 17-11.
Both teams' defenses failed to pull their weight, as the Hawks notched four fielding errors while La Salle had three. Just nine of the game's 20 combined runs were of the earned variety.
The Explorers will hop back on the Atlantic 10 train next weekend for a three game series at Fordham beginning on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
